The Highlands is a large lot upscale community located off Beach/Nash road corridors close to the rapidly expanding Chesterfield Courthouse region of central Chesterfield County. Developed by George Emerson, a large local developer, builder and investor, The Highlands spans many acres and is largely focused on the central lake with clubhouse, pool complex and several signature golf holes of the neighborhood semi-private golf course.

The housing in The Highlands would be considered to be upscale and luxurious, especially along the lake, and the larger home sites offer a spacing and privacy that differs from much of the neighborhood development prevalent in other Chesterfield communities. Due to the larger homesites, the neighborhood provide buyers with public water but relies on septic fields instead of the public sewer system.

As with many larger lot subdivisions, housing tends to be a little more varied with more input from the individual buyers during construction. The architectural styles within the neighborhood are consistent with the age of the subdivision and include mostly colonial and transitional-styles.
